Driving Lessons Throughout Chitterne
We teach students throughout Chitterne and this remote corner of Salisbury Plain. Living in a village of just 300 people means we come to you, wherever that is, because there’s no other sensible option.
Many of our Chitterne students feel nervous about learning to drive, which makes sense when you consider how isolated rural driving can feel at first. We focus on building confidence at your pace, starting with familiar local roads before gradually introducing busier conditions. There’s no rushing, no pressure, just steady progress that actually sticks.
Chitterne sits about 18 miles from Salisbury test centre, which works out to roughly 30 minutes by road. You’ll drive this route twice every lesson, so by the time test day arrives, it feels as familiar as your own driveway.

Your Driving Instructors for Chitterne
I became an instructor as I loved driving and found a lot of joy in teaching in a previous job. I genuinely love the job and a lot of passion for what I do. Outside of this, you’ll find me in the gym, up a mountain or at the side of a lake, trying to catch some large carp.
I’ve been a driving instructor for over 20 years now — how time flies! I still teach with passion and a sense of fun, because I believe we all learn quicker when we’re enjoying ourselves.
Outside of lessons, I’ve recently discovered a love for gardening (I must be getting old!). I have two grown-up children who are now enjoying their independence behind the wheel, which gives me more time for long walks with my dog — and the occasional well-earned holiday.
Chitterne Driving Lessons FAQs
Is 30 minutes to Salisbury too much of my lesson time from such a remote village?
No, because that journey time teaches proper skills. Those 30 minutes each way cover rural lanes, A-road driving, and the full range of conditions you need to master. You’re not being driven around as a passenger, you’re actively learning. Plus, by test day, you’ll know that route so well it removes all navigation stress.
I'm nervous about driving and Chitterne feels quite isolated. Will that make learning harder?
Actually, the opposite. We start with Chitterne’s quiet village roads where there’s minimal pressure and plenty of space to build confidence. Only when you’re comfortable do we gradually introduce busier roads. Many students find the rural start much less intimidating than jumping straight into city traffic.
Are Chitterne's narrow lanes suitable for learner drivers?
Perfect for learners! Chitterne’s lanes teach precise vehicle positioning and speed judgment in a low-pressure environment. We start with the widest village roads and progress to narrower lanes as your confidence builds. By test time, you’ll handle any narrow street with ease.
Can you collect me from anywhere in such a small village?
Yes, literally anywhere. We know Chitterne well after years of teaching here. Tell us where suits you best and we’ll arrange collection. Remote location is exactly why we’re flexible about pickup points.
Does Salisbury Plain weather affect lessons much?
Sometimes, yes. Wind, fog, and winter conditions are more noticeable out here than in towns. We’ll only cancel if conditions are genuinely dangerous, though, because learning in varied weather actually benefits you. Better to experience challenging conditions with an instructor than face them alone after passing.
Do you offer automatic lessons?
No — we teach manual lessons only.
Do you teach in the evenings or at weekends?
Yes. We offer weekdays and evenings but we don’t currently offer weekend lessons. Our lessons do fill up fast so they’re all subject to availability.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are booked in 2‑hour blocks (£85).

Practice Routes from Chitterne to Salisbury
Most lessons follow a clear pattern that works well for remote village students. We pick you up in Chitterne, spend about 30 minutes driving to Salisbury while building your road skills, focus on test-standard practice in the city itself, then make the return journey. That’s an hour of real-world driving on top of your Salisbury practice time, which means every lesson packs in serious experience.
Chitterne’s location teaches you skills that urban learners often miss. The village roads build confidence with narrow lanes and passing places, while the route out via the A36 develops proper A-road technique with faster speeds and busier junctions. By the time you take your test, you’ve covered everything from quiet rural lanes to city centre traffic.
Living deep in Salisbury Plain means weather plays a role in your learning. Wind across open downland, fog that settles in the valleys, winter conditions that teach respect for the road. That’s good preparation because real driving means handling whatever conditions turn up.
The 30-minute journey each way isn’t dead time. You’re building skills, learning junction approaches, and making that test centre route so familiar it becomes automatic.

View All Testimonials“Having passed first time and thoroughly enjoyed every single lesson, I couldn’t recommend Richard any more highly!
His teaching methods also guarantee that you are capable of driving well in unfamiliar situations and he has been extremely well-organised and thorough in making sure that every lesson is productive as possible.
I really am thankful for his lessons and I recommend him to any new learners!”
“Rich was a great instructor and I passed first time, would highly recommend. Definitely learnt more about driving than just how to pass the test. Also a great laugh when appropriate and he really helped calm my nerves before the test. Thank you!”
“I started driving lessons when I was 17, and have gone through 3 other driving instructors but found it just wasn’t the right fit. I’m 21 now and passed my test yesterday, and it was all thanks to Rich. After not driving for almost a year and a half I started again in January with rich and by April I have now passed. And I couldn’t have done it without him. He is genuinely the most lovely guy and puts you so at ease. Any mistakes made he doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable he tells you it’s fine and I would improve and we carry on. He explains everything in a way that you just understand and means you can remember easily. I would recommend Rich to anyone who asked me about driving lessons as I genuinely couldn’t think of anyone better to learn with. And I’ve tried a few… Thank you again, So So much!”
“I wholeheartedly recommend Passmaster Driving School, and through Rich’s lessons I passed my test first time with no minors.
Rich is professional, kind, approachable and takes the time to make sure you’re comfortable with everything. He really makes you feel at ease and I’ve had a great time learning with him.
Thanks so much Passmaster!”
“My instructor was Richard Langley and I can say that he is absolutely the best driving instructor that I’ve had.
If you are serious about being a good driver and not just passing your test, want structure and genuine thought into your learning process and someone who will pinpoint your weaknesses and help you get past them, go with Rich.
The lessons are two hours when I was doing them, and the test itself will seem remarkably easy in comparison to Rich putting you through your paces. Highly recommended and good choice if you are brand new to driving or you are swapping instructors and just need someone to iron out your weaknesses.
Lastly, I’ll say that Rich made himself available to help me pass on a day that he’d normally have off – the man genuinely cares about his students. Can’t ask for more from a teacher.”
“Rich is an absolute legend, couldn’t ask for a better instructor. So easy to get along with and is such a supportive and patient person. Passed first time thanks to him, couldn’t have done it without him.”
“Couldn’t recommend Rich more highly as a driving instructor! Patient, supportive and knowledgeable teacher who always put me at ease as an anxious driver, who helped me build my confidence and knew when to push me outside my comfort zone. Will be recommending Rich to anyone as he made learning to drive such a fun and enjoyable experience and helped me pass first time with just 6 months learning ! Will greatly miss my weekly lessons with him.”
“Rich is an amazing driving instructor, I’ve been driving with him for a while now and he’s been very supportive and understanding. I’ve never felt rushed in a lesson, always felt at ease and comfortable in my lessons. Thank you soo much again rich for helping me pass ☺️”
“For anyone looking to learn to drive, Rich is your guy. Besides being a very competent driving instructor, he is calm, patient, humorous, and a general legend. I was lucky to get a cancellation for my driving test, and Rich set aside extra lessons, including one outside of his normal hours, to ensure that I had the best chance of passing, which I did, with just one minor, which was completely my own fault. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking to learn to drive.”
